Gary Douglas Chace

Obituary for Gary Douglas Chace

Gary Douglas Chace, age 74, of Olathe, KS, passed into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ early Tuesday morning, January 24, 2023, at home. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and loving friend to many. The center of Gary’s life was his faith and relationship with Jesus Christ, the power of the Gospel, and sharing the message of salvation. His life reflected that focus as he selflessly loved and served his family, church family, and friends. He was eager to witness and share the Gospel even up until his final days here with us.

Gary was born on April 3, 1948 in Kansas City, MO, to Clive and Donafae (Kelley) Chace. He grew up with his parents and five siblings in the Rosedale neighborhood in Kansas City, KS. He attended elementary school at Macchochaque and Frank Ruston and graduated from Rosedale Junior-Senior High School. After high school, he attended Kansas City Kansas Junior College where he met his wife Rebecca. They fell in love and were married on July 12, 1969. They briefly lived in Ankeny, IA, while Gary attended Faith Baptist Bible College. While in Iowa, their daughter Marcianna Lynn was born, and soon after her birth they returned to the Kansas City area. A few years after returning to Kansas City, their son Jason was born and four years later, Eric arrived to complete their family. They raised their three children in the Rosedale neighborhood in Kansas City, KS, before making their home in Olathe, KS, in 2004. Since his childhood, Gary attended Olivet Baptist Church, where he was a longtime member and faithfully served as a deacon, Sunday school superintendent, school board member, youth leader, usher, and in multiple other capacities over the years. Gary was employed by the Water District #1 of Johnson County, now WaterOne, for 40 years before retiring as a supervisor in 2011.

Gary loved playing and listening to music. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping and canoeing. He loved sports, especially Wildcat football at Kansas State, where two of his children graduated. But mostly, he loved anything that involved being with and supporting his family. Whether it was coaching an athletic team, driving a van of teenagers to an out-of-town competition, watching his grandchildren and nieces and nephews perform at a local event, or just seeing his siblings for holiday celebrations. Gary cherished every moment with family and eagerly anticipated the next gathering.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Clive and Donafae Chace; his sisters Elizabeth Nance and Edith Ruiz; and his brother Brian Chace. He is survived by his wife Rebecca; his siblings Loren and Sharon Chace of Overland Park, KS, and Dennis Chace of Overland Park, KS; his Aunt Betty Brown of Wellsville, KS; his children, Marcianna Lynn and Sean Clouse of Lenexa, KS, Jason and Keely Chace of Overland Park, KS, Eric and Linden Chace of Tacoma, WA; grandchildren Colin Clouse, Olivia Chace, Caden Clouse, Amelia Chace, Caitlyn Clouse, and Abilene Chace; multiple nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A visitation is scheduled from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Monday, January 30, at Olivet Baptist Church, 4901 Mission Rd, Westwood, KS 66205. A funeral service will be held the following day at 11:00 A.M, on Tuesday, January 31, at the church with a burial service to follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Kansas City, KS. Family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Shawnee Mission Christian School or Whitefield Academy. Thank you to all who have faithfully cared for our family during this time, and a special thank you to Kansas City Hospice and Olivet Baptist Church. Arrangements are made with Maple Hill Funeral Home.
